The roses amidst the males, on the contrary, take on a much somber tone. The scattered petals would then serve as a warning, to the viewer as well as to the sitter, against placing too much trust in objects of only fragile and transient beauty. Humfrey surmises that this combination suggests that the sitter may be in bereavement, and reaching for the roses for comfort.

This elegant High Baroque carved giltwood cassetta frame is made of pine. Reduced at the corners the miters are now secured with tapered splines made of oak. The sight edge ornament is carved in acanthus leaf and shield. The hollowed frieze, carved in the manner of a stone relief, is ornamented in bold scrolling lotus leaf cauliculi with applied cartouches at the four centers.
A course of triple pearling and reel lies within a repeated larger course of acanthus and shield ornament before the narrow fillet at the top edge. The surface is burnished water gilding overall. Lotus leaf ornament is typical of seventeenth-century Spain. Versions of these frames were made in Peru using tropical wood and gilded but with red painted fields.
